  • Do you do boxing and kickboxing?
We are focussed on the sweet science (that’s boxing). There is a kickboxing club which uses the gym (contact Luis Pacheco on 021 0251 5037 or by email on helen.raynor@xtra.co.nz).

    Do you have to fight?
The classes are non-contact. They are to provide a fun way to get fit and toned. We use the bags, pads, and skipping ropes to get you moving. You will learn the basics of boxing techniques but you do not have to fight or spar.

What if I want to compete?
We have two sessions a week focused on fight skills. Tuesdays and Thursdays 6.30-8pm. We can also support fighters in the ring.

    What should I bring?
The club provides hand wraps and gloves and all the equipment you will need. You simply need to turn up ready to work out (training shoes, shorts and t-shirt or singlet).  You should also bring a water bottle and workout towel.

What facilities does the gym have?
We are a boxing gym so we have a small weights set but no cardio equipment such as treadmills or cross trainers. The gym has eleven punching bags as well as sets of pads, gloves and skipping ropes. There is also a floor ring and a 100sqm of mat area. There is a changing area but we do not have showers.

Do you have classes for kids?
We run classes for kids every Tuesday and Thursday at 4pm. Cost is $5 per class or $40 for ten classes. Kids need to be aged over 6.

How many times should I come each week?
That depends on what other sports/exercise you do. Boxing can be your total exercise programme – in which case you would want to be coming 3-4 times a week. But if you are doing other sports or other forms of exercise you will need to plan accordingly. Jo Watt, the trainer at Gloves is also a qualified Personal Trainer and can advise you on what’s best for you.

    Who is the coach/trainer?
Jo Watt is the coach at Gloves Boxing Gym. She holds a level 1 boxing coaching licence and is a qualified personal trainer. She has been boxing for over 15 years  and has run the VUW boxing club (a registered competition club) for six years.

What do you do in a class?
It depends on the style of class but usually what happens is a warm up with the skipping ropes then work on the bags and pads, followed up with some conditioning work and a stretch and cool down.
